Great North Run results: Who crossed the finish line first in men’s, women’s and wheelchair races

As per tradition, the Great North Run drew in world-class athletes on Sunday, with fierce competition across all elite races. Over time, athletics legends have flocked to participate in the renowned Newcastle to South Shields road race, with Olympic icons such as Paula Radcliffe and Mo Farah joining the throng for what is considered the world’s best half marathon.

Last year saw Mary Ngugi-Cooper clinch the women’s title, with Britain’s Eilish McColgan finishing fifth. As elite athletes began to descend on Tyneside for this year’s events, all eyes were on Eilish, hoping she would follow in her mother Liz’s footsteps by securing a Great North Run victory.

A year ago, the men’s race was won by Abel Kipchumba, who was once again a strong contender following his 2024 triumph over Britain’s Mark Scott. As 60,000 participants lined up at the start line just outside of Newcastle city centre on Sunday, the wheelchair race kicked off proceedings at 10.20am, followed by the elite women five minutes later.

Next, it was the turn of Newcastle United stars Nick Pope and Jacob Murphy to set the masses in motion, with live BBC coverage, not hosted by Gabby Logan this year, tracking the elites as they made their way through Gateshead and towards the South Shields coast, reports Chronicle Live.
