Marske Indian takeaway ‘committed’ to meeting standards after ‘improvement necessary’ rating

A young takeaway boss says he’s “committed” to meeting cleanliness and safety standards after being told to improve.

Ocean Spice, in Marske, was visited by inspectors on December 5, 2024 and handed a two-star “improvement necessary” rating. The Hummershill Lane takeaway has only recently opened after undergoing a major transformation with bosses saying they’re “committed” to upping standards.

The areas inspectors looked at were hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and management of food safety. The business was rated “improvement necessary” in hygienic food handling but in management of food safety and cleanliness and condition of facilities, Ocean Spice was graded ‘generally satisfactory”.

Following the rating, the takeaway director Shojib told Teesside Live he has transformed the venue and is awaiting a revisit, he said: “As a 19-year-old who just opened my first food venture, I’m committed to making sure our place meets the best standards for cleanliness and safety.

“I’ve done a lot of work onto the takeaway since moving into the building to improve the overall look and feel of the takeaway. I’ve made the takeaway area bigger and transformed it from how it used to be dark to a much lighter and brighter space with seating for customers.

“Although I couldn’t finish a few updates in the back before the inspection, I’ve made good progress in getting the rest of the building and structural work up to standard again.

“We are already waiting for a re visit, I have put new procedures in place and have retrained all the staff and all issues have been rectified. I’m looking forward and waiting for the next inspection and I think you’ll see how we’ve made a lot of improvement since the last inspection.”

Ocean Spice takeaway is an Indian and pizzeria offering a “world of flavours and spices”, the takeaway website says: “We offer a world of flavours and spices, which all come together to create a dining experience that will transport you to another world. Our chef prepares all of our authentic dishes completely fresh, we also offer a wide range of authentic Indian cuisine to suit anyone’s tastes.”
