UK NEWS: Couple ditch horse-drawn carriage for 1930s ‘Love Train’ for wedding

A Yorkshire couple has opted for a decidedly unique mode of transport for their ‘Great Gatsby’-inspired nuptials, shunning the conventional carriage and instead boarding a train complete with 1930s Pullman allure.

Ben Miller and partner Lorenzo Garofalo are whisking 40 friends away on the Northern Belle, affectionately dubbed ‘The Love Train’, for their wedding celebration. Ben, 32, who has shifted from theatre performing to producing themed entertainment, said: “We wanted to do something unique and memorable, although I don’t think either of us envisioned the day we’ve crafted!”

On Thursday, May 15, the festive group will depart from Liverpool’s Lime Street station, embarked on a journey to an opulent floating hotel in Edinburgh. During the trip to Scotland’s capital, the guests will indulge in a three-course brunch before a luxury coach greets them at Leith port to continue the celebrations.

Lorenzo, 45, a store manager from Bury, Lancs, shared: “We didn’t want an off-the-shelf wedding. We wanted something that was unique to us, something that captures our sense of adventure and love of history, so we are recreating the glamour and romance of a bygone age.”

To make the event even more memorable, both the couple and their guests will be donning attire inspired by characters from F Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel, The Great Gatsby, which marks its 100th anniversary this year. Ben, hailing from Sheffield, shared: “We wanted to create unforgettable memories for our guests, with a day so different to the normal format of a wedding. A wedding should be a story of a couple’s life, so it seemed natural to create a wedding with a narrative that allows us and our guests to live their 1930s fantasy.

“The Northern Belle train is renowned for its elegant décor and gourmet dining, echoing the romance of travel during the golden age of the 1930s. It also holds a special place in the hearts of the LGBTQ community. This isn’t just a wedding – it’s a production, an experience and a love story brought to life.”

A representative for the Northern Belle, formerly part of the legendary Orient Express group, expressed: “We’re proud and delighted to be getting Ben and Lorenzo on the right tracks for marriage. We’ve had several couples get engaged on board before but this is the first time anybody has actually got married. If this trend catches on, we’ll have to rebrand the Belle as the Love Train!”
